Magnet therapy: yesterday and
today
Magnets were used for therapeutic purposes in China as early
as 2000 BC. Legend has it that Cleopatra wore a magnetic bracelet to preserve
her youth and beauty. Paracelsus, the famous German doctor, William Gilbert,
the personal physician of Elizabeth I of England, and Franz J. Mesmer in the
18th century successfully treated pain, gout, cramps and nervous disorders
using magnet therapy. Mozart was so enthusiastic about Mesmer's therapeutic
successes that he referred to the beneficial effect of magnets in his opera
"Cosi fan Tutti". (Despina sings: "This is the magnet, the Mesmeric stone that

With the advent

No
side effects
In an experiment in Holland, a live frog was levitated
in a magnetic field of 160,000 gauss and subsequently showed no side effects.
Magnetic flux density is measured in tesla or gauss (1 tesla = 10,000 gauss).
The gauss number indicates the number of lines of magnetic force passing
through one square centimetre. The US Food and Drug Administration has
recommended electromagnetic devices since 1978, particularly for broken bones,

Magnetic field deficiency syndrome
The earth's
magnetic field - the magnetic force that influences all living beings - has
decreased considerably over the last 500 years and is now only 0.5 gauss. Dr.
Nakagawa (Tokyo) wrote an article in 1976 in which he described a condition he
called "magnetic field deficiency syndrome". Symptoms include stiffness of the
shoulders, back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, disturbed sleep, digestive
problems, circulatory problems and general fatigue. Dr. Nakagawa asked 11,648
users of magnet therapy (magnetic plasters, necklaces and belts) about their
experiences: over 90% rated magnet therapy as effective and only 10% as
ineffective. No side effects were reported. Our life in concrete and steel
buildings, cars, trains, planes, etc. also reduces the effect of the earth's
